I'm all about creating things, from comics to video games -- only when I'm creating do I feel like myself. I made this website in September 2016. But it all started on Christmas in 2012 when my first daughter was born. It changed everything. The biggest joy came with the realization of being responsible for another human being, which put me in constant self-doubt, anxiety, and panic. I struggled to balance motherhood and work, which I found was a battle that's doomed to fail. In the process of making all the difficult decisions and seeking a peace of mind, I've been learning, changing and growing every day, together with my children. I'm an introvert who rarely inserts herself into conversations, but if you give me a pen, I will draw anything that comes to my mind. After almost 4 years of being occupied with children, working, and thinking, the urge to create an outlet pushed me to document my life. I want to make things that tell the truth. I want to make things that are close to my heart. I want to make things that after they are grown, my children will read and laugh, and they will understand who I am. I want to share my stories to connect with people. My family is my primary source of inspiration. If this will benefit them in any way in the future, it will be a dream come true. For everyone who enjoys my work, I’m happy that we share the feelings and a dry sense of humor. Weng Chen

Messycow comics was started with an impulse. I didn’t spend any time designing anything, just dove in and started drawing. If you’ve paid attention, from the beginning till now the style has been all over the places. Now I’ve done over 60 strips. it’s time to give it an art direction.

I do this all the time since I’m a game concept artist. The reason why I didn’t do it from the beginning is that when you have ideas that you are passionate about, get on it, start working and making things happen. Too much planning and design could ruin the momentum. Also, you want to make the beginning as simple as possible. Starting a new thing is hard enough, don’t restrain yourself with too much planning, and in this case, designing.

Anyway, I made this character sheet tonight( I know I’m overdue with comics, but I had this strong urge to design at the moment). The Messycow character is the hard one, I wasn’t happy with the one I had before and I’m still experimenting. What do you think? Which one do you like more? Your feedback helps!

When I was about 2, 3 years old, my mom drew me a little mermaid and told me the story. I was fascinated, it was like magic that the most beautiful picture just came from my mom’s pen. I believe that was when I fell in love with drawing and storytelling.

I want to inspire my children by drawing stories for them. Reading a picture book is one thing, but nothing can compare with seeing the process of an image emerge from nothing, and understanding anyone can do it. I want them to learn that drawing is a powerful tool, we can use it to express feelings and tell stories.

Here is a video I made about me drawing the story ” The Little Match Girl” to my children. It’s in Chinese, so most of you don’t understand, but I just want to encourage you to try this with your kiddos, it’s fun and sweet times.
