I got into video making lately and it’s soo much fun! I’m glad to learn another creative way of documenting and sharing my life. This one was shot on my old LG Android phone and a Nikon D90– Not the perfect setting for making videos, but hey you get to start from somewhere. I just got a Canon G7X and the new videos will have better quality.
I’m speaking Chinese mostly in my videos because it’s what I’m comfortable with. I talk to my children in Chinese and my husband in English in real life.
The bilingual thing has always been a complication in my creative world because I have to consider audiences from both languages. English isn’t my native language and is my weak spot, but my life is in the US, and I care about people on this side of the world. I can communicate in Chinese much more freely and creatively. Even it’s so far away, China is my home country, so I also care about the audience there. So I’ve been translating my comics into Chinese and trying to build an audience there.
It’s a lot of work to keep up both sides, I wish I could just focus on one. But both have pros and cons, and it’s hard for me to make a decision. For now, I keep working and see.
Making videos is new to me, I want to put them out as quick as I can so I picked the easier language and didn’t bother adding subtitles. I’m exploring so if you have any suggestions, please let me know!
Having “seen” your kiddos so many times in the comics, it’s rather satisfying to see all y’all in person. I’m glad you put through the effort in both languages. I suspect if you ever did choose one language, you would feel happy … for awhile. Then … unsettled. You kinda live in both worlds, and your art reflects that. I say embrace it … and perhaps aim for a slower pace of creation, if the extra effort is too much (and I imagine it easily piles up).
